Forests Forever Curriculum and CD-Rom (4-6 Grade)

The Wisconsin Forest Resources Education Alliance (WFREA) partnered with Project Learning Tree (PLT), Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education (WCEE), and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to develop The Wisconsin Forests Forever Curriculum Guide (download the PDF file for free!) and Interactive CD-ROM.

The Wisconsin Forests Forever CD-ROM has been incorporated into the LEAF K-12 forestry curriculum. It is located in the Grade 4 Unit within Lesson 6 titled Forests Are Important to You and Me. In this lesson, students learn that:

humans value forests for their aesthetic, cultural, ecological, economic, educational, and recreational benefits.

forests impact air and water quality, prevent soil erosion, and provide habitat for wildlife.

humans depend on forests for products and services that they use every day.

choices humans make today directly affect our ability to sustain forest ecosystems essential to meeting future needs.

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

discuss the importance of forests to our economy, environment, and social well-being.

describe the ecological roles of forests.

identify that humans depend on forests for products and services.

Order the interactive CD-ROM for $20 (includes shipping and handling) by toll-free phone (1-888-WFREA-64) or email (nick@wfrea.org).

Additional CDs are $10.00 each (includes shipping and handling).

"I obtained a copy of your Wisconsin Forests Forever CD from a LEAF course I took this summer. I think it's an incredible resource!" - Donna Hayes, teacher

School Forest Manual

The Wisconsin Forest Resources Education Alliance (WFREA) partnered with Project Learning Tree (PLT); Trees for Tomorrow; UW-Extension; Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education (WCEE); and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to develop a manual titled How to Grow a School Forest. The school forest manual has been distributed by the Wisconsin School Forest Education Specialist with LEAF since March of 2003. The updated version maintains the basic format of this excellent and very popular resource while providing:

updated, live website links.

live links within the handbook to quickly get to relevant information.

additional resources on vandalism and professional development opportunities.

categorized appendix.

LEAF encourages school forest coordinators, teachers, and administrators to use the handbook on-line to take full advantage of its electronic format. If an individual prefers a hard copy, he/she may preview the section of interest before printing so as not to miss any of the linked materials. If an educator prefers the handbook in CD-ROM format, he/she may contact the school forest education specialist (jsolin@uwsp.edu, 715-346-4907).
